For many young college students, landing their first big internship is both exciting and nerve-wracking. This is exactly how I felt coming into my summer internship at PacLease. Working in a corporate environment offers a very different experience than what the typical college student is used to. Nonetheless, the experiences and skills I have gained throughout my internship have been instrumental to both my personal and professional development. As I reflect on my time at PacLease, my biggest takeaways are the value in getting outside of your comfort zone and being proactive.
Getting Outside Your Comfort Zone
Coming into my internship, I didn’t know what to expect. I was new to the corporate environment and knew little about the truck industry. In my first few weeks, I was exposed to new terminology, processes, and expectations. I was also introduced to new people and teams I would be working with. These changes put me outside my comfort zone, which allowed me to constantly learn and challenge myself. With the help of a welcoming and supportive environment, I was able to get up to speed quickly. While getting outside of your comfort zone can be daunting, I found it was the time when I learned and grew the most.
Being Proactive
As an intern, your experience is what you make of it. In my role, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects. I got to work with the marketing and fuel tax teams, as well as other PACCAR divisions. This required me to take the initiative and lead communication on various projects. If I needed help, I had to utilize the resources available to me and consult with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). It was up to me to manage my time and ask meaningful questions. By doing so, I was able to make the most of the opportunities given to me and work to achieve my goals.
Invaluable Real-Life Business Experience
My internship at PacLease has provided me with real-life business experience as well as professional development. From learning new software, creating reports for key decision-makers, to managing social media, these experiences have strengthened my professional aptitude. Working on a great team with people who are willing to help me and give valuable feedback has also furthered my growth. Ultimately, the projects I’ve worked on throughout my internship have given me experience that cannot be found in typical college courses.
I am grateful for the opportunities I have had as a Marketing Intern at PACCAR Leasing Company. While my internship is coming to an end, I will always remember the great summer I had at PACCAR Leasing Company and the amazing people I got to work with. For individuals navigating the professional world, my advice would be to ask questions, utilize the resources available to you, and have fun!
