Jayco Manufacturing Leverages PacLease Fleet Solutions for Just-In-Time Deliveries

While you probably have never heard of Jayco, chances are you have used what the company has fabricated. From seatbelt buckles on airplanes to key components in escalators, elevators, and HVAC systems, Jayco manufactures the parts that keep essential systems running smoothly. It’s a company that plays an instrumental role in producing an array of components for products we depend on every day.
Founded in 1998 by Kevin Maynard, the company has headquarters in Grand Prairie, Texas, and business is thriving. Sales ballooned from $16 million in 2018 to $40 million by the end of the 2025 fiscal year. Key drivers for its growth include the expansion of two manufacturing facilities and the establishment of its own transportation department years ago, which now includes leased trucks from PacLease.
“PacLease has been a great partner in our success.” And it all started with an “ask.”
Jayco had a large customer 90 miles away, and as that customer grew, it required deliveries of specialty Jayco products twice daily at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Five days a week.
“I remember it clearly,” said Maynard. “They had tried to find a reliable carrier who could guarantee two loads each day at specific times…they even asked us to try and find someone. But we couldn’t come up with a reliable solution. So, I said, “We will get a truck, and we’ll make the deliveries. We’ll make it happen.”
With that, Jayco broadened its reach and service capabilities by adding customer deliveries. Plus, it became more efficient by transporting its own fabricated parts to finishing plants.
Today in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex, Jayco operates two Peterbilt Model 579-day cabs and two Peterbilt medium-duty Model 536 box trucks from PacLease. Notably, the box vans use components that Jayco fabricated. It also runs a Class 8 sleeper unit. In its South Carolina fabrication plant, it recently onboarded a Model 579-day cab from PacLease.
“Part of what separates our company from competitors is our ability to deliver with our own trucks,” said Maynard. “So many of our customers are just-in-time -- they need our products at specific times and windows. You're only as good as your delivery. That’s the part that touches your customer.”
Prior to leasing with PacLease, Maynard learned the hardships of ownership. “We owned our first trucks, but reliability issues and breakdowns started occurring. And that meant I had to scramble to find rental trucks to keep up with deliveries. While we shielded our customers from our problems -- we bent over backward to keep up with deliveries -- we spent a lot of unnecessary work on the back end, plus big expenses to keep things going.”
According to Maynard, a change was needed. Enter leasing, PacLease and Peterbilt trucks. “PacLease and Peterbilt trucks have made our operation more efficient and less stressful,” said Maynard. “We know our costs and can budget, and PacLease is right there to support us. They’re located close by and handle maintenance on weekends for us, and if there ever is a need for a loaner truck, they’re always readily available. In fact, we used a loaner truck in South Carolina while we waited for our leased unit to be delivered. They look out for us and work with us to ensure we’re as efficient as possible.”
The quality of trucks Jayco operates is also important. “It’s easy to get good drivers when you have great trucks,” Maynard said. “I’ve driven the box trucks myself to customer locations, and Peterbilt makes a fantastic vehicle – it drives more like a van than a truck. We operate a top-flight company, and the Peterbilts we operate mirror that dedication to excellence.”
PacLease spec’d Peterbilt 579s with the full PACCAR powertrain, which includes the PACCAR MX-13 engine, rated at 455 hp, PACCAR TX-12 automated transmission, and the PACCAR DX-40 rear-axle. The medium-duty Peterbilts feature the PACCAR PX-7 engine with 260 hp, and the PACCAR TX-8, 8-speed automated transmission.
When spec’ing the Peterbilts, Maynard said he had his senior driver work with PacLease on components and the powertrain. “Our drivers know our routes, weights we haul, and other needs, so we thought it was essential to have our lead driver work with PacLease during the spec’ing process,” he said. “The end result are trucks that our drivers love to operate. And trucks that make our operation efficient.”
Over the years, Jayco’s transportation department has become more sophisticated and customer-centric. “We’ve now set up a milk run for that very first customer who required a truck,” Maynard said. “We will pick up four or five deliveries along the route from our customers’ vendors and make a delivery to their production site. We then do it all over again. It shows our commitment to customer service. We feel that thinking outside the box and solving problems for our customers makes us a more valuable partner.”
Internally, trucks are helping as well. “They’re not only making deliveries to customers, but they’re being used to shuttle parts from our fabrication plant to a powder coating, plating, or heat-treating facility,” said Maynard. “We’re very streamlined. And, in some cases, with our day cabs, we will do backhauling to offset our costs.”
Looking back, Maynard said he was glad he had asked his friend for advice after his initial introduction to trucks. “We started with a couple of trucks without really knowing a lot about them,” he said. “My buddy said get new and get quality…he raved about Peterbilts. Leasing was the other component we learned about, and PacLease had the Peterbilts. They knew the vehicles inside and out, plus they had the service behind the trucks -- all the way from letting us refuel at their facility to letting us park our trucks there at night during a period when there was theft around our area. PacLease has been a great partner.”
