CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Week Is Fast Approaching July 7-13th

By Tosha Missel, Senior Marketing Specialist

Operation Safe Driver Week has been announced for July 7-13th by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). The focus area for this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week is reckless, careless or dangerous driving.

Law enforcement personnel in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. will be on the lookout for commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers who exhibit the following unsafe driving behaviors:

  •          Speeding
  •          Distracted Driving
  •          Following too Closely
  •          Drunk or Drugged Driving
  •          And More

Warning or citations will be issued to drivers engaging in such behaviors. Safe-driving enforcement and outreach initiative are aimed to improve driving behaviors through educational and traffic-enforcement strategies along with driver interactions with law enforcement. Any person who drives a vehicle in willful or heedless disregard for the safety of persons or property is guilty of reckless driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, successful transportation safety programs require effective and highly visible communication and outreach efforts. However, these programs are not likely to have an impact unless they are supported by strong enforcement measures. Operation Safe Driver Week aims to enhance road safety by engaging in proactive driver safety education and outreach, as well as responsive traffic enforcement to address dangerous driving behaviors observed on our roads.

2023 Operation Safe Driver Week Results:

A total of 18,875 commercial motor vehicles (CMV) were inspected, with 2,375 (12.6%) being removed from roadways because inspectors discovered brake-related out-of-service violations.

With CVSA Operation Safe Driver Week fast approaching, it is important to ensure that your drivers are well-prepared. Studies have indicated that problematic driving behaviors tend to decrease when drivers are subjected to traffic stops and engage in interactions with law enforcement. Assist your fleet in reversing this trend and minimize the likelihood of infractions.
