Is Your Fleet Ready for the CVSA Brake Safety Week August 25-31st?

By Tosha Missel, Senior Marketing Specialist

Brake Safety Week has been announced for the week of August 25th – 31st. Is your fleet prepared?

Starting August 25th, CVSA-certified inspectors across North America will conduct inspections focusing on brake systems and components for Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Brake Safety Week. More than 3.4 million brakes have been inspected since the program’s inception in 1998.

Brake violations during roadside inspections constitute the highest percentage of out-of-service citations. When brake systems are inadequately installed or poorly maintained, it can significantly diminish the braking capacity and stopping distance of trucks and buses, which poses a serious risk to the drivers and the public.

2023 Brake Safety Week Results

Inspectors in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. conducted 18,875 commercial motor vehicle inspections Aug. 20-26, 2023, for Brake Safety Week. Of those inspected 2,375 (12.6%) were removed from roadways because inspectors discovered brake-related out-of-service violations.

Of the 2,375 commercial motor vehicles that were placed out of service:

  • 295 (12.4%) Steering Axle Brake Violations
  • 1,127 (47.5%) Stand-Alone Brake Violations
  • 1,394 (58.7%) Failed the 20% Defective Brakes Criterion

Some examples of brake-related out-of-service violations that automatically place the commercial motor vehicle out of service include:

  • Broken Brake Drums
  • Loose Air Tanks
  • Corroded Holes in a Spring Brake Housing
  • Inoperative Tractor Protection Valves
  • And More

Brake Safety Week serves as a reminder to CMV drivers, carriers, and mechanics to ensure full compliance with regulations for every vehicle in operation. By proactively addressing proactive vehicle maintenance, you can ensure that your equipment and drivers remain operational and avoid being part of the violation statistics.
