Be Prepared: CVSA Operation Safe Driver is Coming July 13th – 19th
By Tosha Missel, Senior Marketing Specialist
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has officially announced that Operation Safe Driver Week will occur from July 13th to the 19th. This initiative is designed to promote safe driving practices and improve driver behavior through targeted enforcement and outreach.
The focus of the program is specifically on the actions of drivers, as their decisions— such as speeding or a lack of attention—are the leading cause to most accidents. In fact, driver behavior is responsible for an astounding 94% of all traffic collisions.
Throughout this week, law enforcement agencies across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will actively monitor both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers for unsafe driving.Officers will be on the lookout for reckless, careless, or dangerous driving, which is defined by operating a vehicle without proper care, attention, or consideration for other road users.
Here are some key highlights from the 2024 Operation Safe Driver Week (Canada & U.S.):
- Vehicles Pulled Over: 11,050 vehicles
- Warnings Issued: 3,228
- Speeding Citations: 2,712 tickets issued
With Operation Safe Driver Week fast approaching, it’s crucial that all drivers take a moment to reflect on their own driving habits and understand the significance of safe driving practices. Having regular safety meetings fosters a strong safety culture by encouraging open dialogue, reducing the likelihood of accidents and injuries. These meetings provide a valuable platform to reinforce safety protocols, review recent incidents, share best practices, and identify and address potential hazards. Here are some suggested topics for your upcoming safety meeting as we head into Operation Safe Driver Week 2025:
- Managing Distractions and Fatigue: Discuss strategies to minimize distractions while driving and recognize signs of driver fatigue.
- Speed Awareness and Defensive Driving: Review the importance of adhering to speed limits and share techniques for anticipating hazards on the road.
- Incident Analysis: Examine recent incidents to identify lessons learned and improve safety practices.
- Weather Safety and Vehicle Maintenance: Provide tips on adjusting driving behavior in various weather conditions and emphasize the importance of regular vehicle inspections.
- Setting Personal Safety Goals: Encourage drivers to establish individual safety goals for the week.
By covering these key topics, we can strengthen our commitment to safe driving and promote a lasting culture of safety. Let us all commit to being more responsible and attentive behind the wheel, recognizing that our actions not only affect our safety but also the safety of others sharing the road. Together, we can contribute to a significant reduction in traffic accidents and work towards a future where safe driving is the norm, not the exception.
